Psalm 53


1. Who is your favorite TV, movie or fictional “fool”? What makes him or her foolish?

2. Does this psalm seem familiar (see Psalm 14)? What accounts for this?

3. Why is it foolish to say “there is no God”? In what way is this fool an atheist (verses 1 – 3)?

4. Have you ever been one of these fools?

  • the intellectual seeker
  • the practical atheist
  • self-destructive
  • unhealthy in relationships

5. Is David’s sweeping indictment a bit exaggerated? Or exceptionally accurate? Explain.

6. What does this psalm say about God’s view of evil? What does God plan to do about it?

7. What tempts you to think “there is no God”? Does distance from God affect your behavior?

8. What part of your life runs without regard to God? How will you put your faith to work today?
