1 Kings 2:1 – 9

Questions:

1. In what areas (or for what things) do people seek out your advice? What paternal advice do you still remember receiving (or giving)?

2. What kind of king does David want Solomon to be (verses 2 – 4)? What does this say about David?

3. When was David given the promise referred to in verse 4 (see 2 Samuel 7:12, 13, 16)? Why does he want it fulfilled?

4. What kind of advice does David give in verses 5 – 9? What divisions always plagued him (see 2 Samuel 2:4, 10 – 17; 2 Samuel 5:3 – 5; 2 Samuel 15:13, 14)?

5. Why did Joab kill Abner (see 2 Samuel 2:22 – 24) and Amasa (2 Samuel 17:24 – 26; 2 Samuel 19:10 – 13)? Is David really against vengeance?

6. Why did Shimei curse David (verses 8 and 9; see also 2 Samuel 16:5 – 8)? How will David set aside his oath?

7. Do you find it hard to “forgive and forget”? Do you hold grudges? How does the desire for vengeance (even if justified) affect your life?

8. What factions do you find at your church? Are political games played? Does unity mean conformity?
