1. Who was voted “most likely to succeed” in your graduating class? Who is the most successful person you have ever met since? How would you account for their success? born great? achieved greatness? greatness was thrust upon them?
2. At what age did you first say, “I know more than my teachers (or parents)”? In what areas do you now think of yourself as knowledgeable? As ignorant?
3. How does this scene compare with the scene where the four men sat together on a dunghill, in silence (see chapter 2:11 – 13)? What is happening to the sympathy which Eliphaz used to express to Job (see chapter 4:3, 4; chapter 5:17 – 19)?
4. Why is he so offended with Job? Of what is he accusing Job (verses 7 – 9)?
5. What does Job “know” that his friends don’t know? What types of knowledge do they possess (verse 10)? Whose words do they claim to be speaking?
6. What is Eliphaz’ view of humanity (verses 14 – 16)? How does that compare with Job’s view (see chapter 10:12 and 13)?
7. How does Eliphaz describe the plight of the evil men in verses 20 – 35? In what ways do evil people suffer? (And are they aware of it?) In what ways do they prosper?
8. In denying evil always prosper, is Eliphaz answering Job’s real question, or avoiding it? How so?
9. Is Eliphaz correct in his view of the human plight? How does Eliphaz compare to the psalmist in his views on the prosperity of the wicked (see Psalm 73)? How do you reconcile the two descriptions of the plight of the evil person?
10. Who do you consider “evil” in the world today? How aware do you think they are of their evil? Are they tormented or unfeeling?
11.Why do you think the wicked prosper? Why aren’t good people honored and evil persons shown for who they are?
12. In your experience, have you seen the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? How do you account for that? Is God to blame? Why or why not?
